CAFOD LENT FAST DAY 2010 26^th February 2010—50^th anniversary of Lent Fast Day and we’re asking you to give it up!  Most of us usually give up something for Lent like biscuits, wine, a big dinner on a Friday. This year why not create some amazing changes for people who live in the developing world by giving the money saved to CAFOD? The money you save by missing out on your favourite biscuits each day, for example, could go towards a bicycle to help a health volunteer take food to orphaned children. Fasting and Abstinence Guidelines

for Ash Wednesday & Good Friday

Fasting is observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday (Others may still wish to fast if they are able) On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.

Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

Almsgiving in conjunction with fast and abstinence and linked with a greater intensity in prayer opens our awareness to the needs of others for whom fasting and abstinence are a way of life by virtue of their socio-economic status. For those of us who have the privilege of being able to fast and abstain, we do so in solidarity with our less fortunate sisters and brothers throughout the world, and unite our sacrifice with theirs in interceding to the Lord for peace in our time.

TUESDAY EVENINGS IN LENT!  Tuesday evenings during Lent at 7.30pm beginning Tues 23rd Feb (after the 7pm Mass) ‘Believe’  is a great set of DVD reflections on the Creed in a six-part series exploring the treasures of our faith as expressed in the Nicene Creed. Presented by David Payne (Director of CaFE) in various locations including the Holy Land, Nicaea, Rome, Oxford, Cambridge and London, each session lasts approximately 35 minutes and features several interviews with prominent men and women of faith. This will be followed by a short discussion. Take up something this Lent and come along to ‘BELIEVE’!

LENT BOOKLETS ‘Walk with me’  - a Lenten Journey of prayer are available in the narthex priced just £1 containing a little meditation for each day of Lent. There are also Lenten Calendars to help of younger people to keep the Spirit of Lent!

CANDLEMASS The lovely Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is celebrated on Tuesday at 7pm which occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus. The Rite of the Blessing of Candles at the beginning of the liturgy reminds us that Jesus is the "light of revelation to all nations." But it also calls to mind Jesus’ challenge to us in the Sermon on the Mount, that we too are meant to be the light of the world. All of us can be a light to others only if we are faithful to God’s covenant, to His Law, which is love. If we strive toward this daily faithfulness to all that is loving, people will recognise the light of Christ shining in us. Do bring the candles that you will be using in your home this year for blessing!

HAITI EARTHQUAKE A very big thank you to all who have contributed towards the Haiti Earthquake appeal. £2141.39 has now been raised. Thank you for your generosity on behalf of the CAFOD campaign. REMINDER TO PARENTS A Children's Liturgy of the Word takes place at most Sunday 10.30am Masses. This is suitable for children from toddlers to pre-first communion age. This is a liturgy ie part of the Mass NOT a Sunday school. The children hear the same scriptures (in children's format) and receive catechesis on the Sunday gospel followed by bidding prayers. Do encourage your children to participate in the Sunday Children’s Liturgy. Please also keep our Children’s Liturgy leaders in your prayers as they spend much time preparing for these important liturgies. Once a month there is no Children’s Liturgy (This will fall next weekend) when the children will be share in the Liturgy of the Word with the whole community in Church. Next week some of the children will be involved in praying the Prayer of the Faithful.

TOMORRROW we move into ‘Ordinary Time’. Next Sunday is the 2nd in Ordinary Time Year C / Midweek Lectionary cycle 2. Ordinary Time encompasses that part of the Christian year that does not fall within the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, or Easter. The Latin Tempus Per Annum ("time throughout the year") is rendered into English as "Ordinary Time." Ordinary Time gets its name from the word ordinal, meaning "numbered," since the Sundays of Ordinary Time, as in other seasons, are expressed numerically. There is nothing ‘ordinary’, in the secular sense, for we continue to live and celebrate the Paschal Mystery!

THE CHRISTMAS CRIB will be in place until the last Feast of the Christmas cycle— the Baptism of the Lord on 10th January. Do pay a visit to the crib when you are in Church and encourage the young children to say a prayer in front of the crib. Gaze upon the depiction of our God who loves us so much that he became human to show us the fullness of that love. The basket at the back of the Church is for the traditional crib offering to the Clifton Children’s Society.

THE CHRISTMAS CRIB will be in place until the last Feast of the Christmas cycle— the Baptism of the Lord on 10th January. Do pay a visit to the crib when you are in Church and encourage the young children to say a prayer in front of the crib. Gaze upon the depiction of our God who loves us so much that he became human to show us the fullness of that love. The basket at the back of the Church is for the traditional crib offering to the Clifton Children’s Society.

JOURNEY IN FAITH (RCIA) takes a break over the Christmas Holidays and resumes on Wednesday 13th January at 7pm.

SOLEMNITY OF THE EPHIPHANY is celebrated next Sunday. The Bishop’s of England and Wales have transferred this holyday from Jan 6th to the Sunday.

SWINE FLU Although we have now returned to a normal routine for the administration of Holy Communion, please remember that if you have coughs, colds or flu like symptoms, you are still asked to refrain from the shared chalice.

CHRISTMAS THANKYOU Thank you to everyone who has helped make Christmas so special especially our musicians, singers, sacristans, those who prepared the church crib, trees, decorations and flowers, servers, liturgical ministers, cleaners and those who prepared the social events. Much hard work goes into ensuring that the festivities run smoothly for the community and this is reflected in the beauty of our church and liturgy.
